The rally left Cape Town in the Union of South Africa on 15 January 1962 and reached Barcelona on April 17, at 7.21 pm. The operation was a complete success, and catapulted the brand to fame and commercial success.

Also in 1962, the IMPALA won the Golden Delta award for the best industrial design from the Association of Industrial Design of the Fomento de las Artes Decorativas.
